Once the genre was in full swing, receiving the attention of teens and adults alike, it was only a matter of time before it began growing out of control. Sub-genres and experimental styles began springing up faster than even jazz music could branch out. It became confusing as to what we should even refer to as rock music, but yet somehow most people can agree on whether or not something is rock. Perhaps it’s just a feeling you get when you listen to the music, or perhaps it is a complex set of musical rules that we can only pick up on subconsciously through the vast repetition of rock music that we’ve already been exposed to throughout the course of our lives.

If you hear a new song on the radio that everyone loves, just give it a chance. Don’t decide it doesn’t have merit as music. Once you’ve heard a catchy new tune a few times, once you find yourself humming it to yourself as you walk down the street, then you will see the true value of pop music. It’s about having fun and enjoying life without evaluating it too critically. This is probably why pop music is timeless and will never go out of style. The classic hits from the past will always be valued and appreciated by our culture, no matter what new kinds of music develop and no matter what new interests people find in the meantime.
